Build security judgement by connecting controls with the assets, people and outcomes they protect. These free ISC2 study guides organise operational security, broader security management, cloud security and secure software learning. Compare the paths, practise the original decision scenarios and choose an additional resource that matches your exact credential target.

Choose the resource matching your intended credential. Operational, cloud, broad security and secure software preparation are not interchangeable.
A business application holds customer information and supports daily work. Describe the important assets and the effect of loss, alteration or unavailable access. Identify which outcome matters in the scenario before recommending a technical control. This keeps your explanation connected with the organisation’s purpose.
Write an original risk scenario with an event, affected asset and consequence. Include the assumptions and the decision owner. Avoid treating a broad label such as “security risk” as a complete analysis. A clear scenario helps another learner compare response options and identify which evidence would change the recommendation.
Explain how a system identifies a user, how the claimed identity is established and what the user may do afterwards. These are related questions with different evidence. A successful login does not mean every application function or dataset should become available.
Use a fictional support operator and a finance analyst. Define the action each role requires and the action that should remain restricted. Include a temporary access request and a condition for its removal. A narrow, reviewable grant is easier to explain than a broad permission added because one test failed.
Describe where information is created, stored, used, shared and eventually removed according to the applicable requirement. Controls need to match those activities. Protecting storage alone may leave another important step, such as exporting a report, outside the intended protection.
Draw a customer report lifecycle and mark who can access each stage. Include a fictional export that contains fields unnecessary for the recipient. Explain the value of limiting the dataset and identify how you would verify the actual output. Keep retention and handling requirements tied to the organisation’s defined needs rather than inventing a universal rule.
A cloud service changes which operational tasks belong to the provider and which remain with the customer. Describe the actual service model and contract assumptions before assigning ownership of a control. A provider’s security feature does not automatically establish that the customer configured its use appropriately.
Create a worksheet for identity, data access, configuration and recovery in a fictional hosted application. Name the responsible party and the evidence needed for each task. Mark any responsibility that remains unclear as a question to resolve. Use the map to explain why moving a workload does not remove the need for customer governance and verification.
Start with the reported symptom, affected assets and timeline. Preserve the meaning of the evidence you use and record which observations are confirmed. An event that occurred near a failure may be relevant, but timing alone does not prove the cause.
Write a short investigation note with facts, a working explanation and the next evidence to collect. Include an action justified by the observed impact and a method of checking its result. Keep restoration, containment and investigation decisions understandable so that an urgent operational action is not mistaken for a completed explanation.
A security design needs more than a preferred product or technique. Describe the required boundaries, trusted actions, expected failures and recovery needs. Compare options against the same requirement and identify what each leaves unresolved.
Use a branch application that must remain usable when one connection fails. Explain the access design and the dependencies needed for recovery. Include a prohibited access test as well as a successful user task. An alternate component being available does not prove that the entire service can recover as intended.
A developer needs a requirement that can influence design and be checked during implementation. Replace a vague instruction such as “make it secure” with specific expectations about input handling, authorised operations and protected information. Connect each expectation with a relevant test.
For a fictional document upload feature, define who may upload, which input should be rejected and which information should be available to another user. Write normal and exceptional tests and identify a review point before release. Keep the exercise focused on defensive design and verification, using harmless fictional data.
Complete these activities in a controlled environment or as written design exercises. Save a brief result and one question for your next session. Use fictional data and verify version-specific steps before applying unfamiliar procedures.
| Step | Activity | What to do | Evidence of understanding |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write a risk scenario | Identify event, asset, consequence and owner | The response can be compared against a defined outcome. |
| 2 | Create an access matrix | List required and restricted actions for two roles | Authentication and authorised access are distinct. |
| 3 | Map cloud responsibilities | Assign identity, data, configuration and recovery tasks | Unclear ownership is visible as an unresolved question. |
| 4 | Prepare an incident note | Separate facts, hypotheses and next evidence | Your conclusion does not exceed the evidence. |
| 5 | Write secure software tests | Include valid use, invalid input and restricted access | The requirement is specific enough to verify. |
| Stage | Learning focus | Practice and review |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Target selection and foundations | Identify event, asset, consequence and owner Map your target objectives to a short topic tracker. |
| Week 2 | Core concepts and access decisions | List required and restricted actions for two roles Explain one permitted and one restricted outcome. |
| Week 3 | Operational scenarios and weaker topics | Assign identity, data, configuration and recovery tasks Investigate a new example without memorising an answer. |
| Week 4 | Mixed practice and resource review | Include valid use, invalid input and restricted access Repeat weak activities and compare your evidence with the intended objectives. |
Four weeks is a planning example, not a promise of readiness. Extend a stage until you can explain its concepts and apply them to another situation. A familiar topic should not crowd out a relevant topic you have not yet practised.
Explanation: No. Examine responsibility, configuration, access and the application’s own requirements. Available controls need to be used appropriately and verified. Identify the evidence that supports each part of the claim.
Explanation: Successful authentication establishes only part of the access journey. Review the authorised purpose and the data needed for that purpose. The report’s scope can remain inappropriate even when the identity check works.
Explanation: You have a possible relationship to investigate. Compare the timeline and relevant evidence before concluding causation. State what is known and what remains a hypothesis, then select a test that can narrow the uncertainty.
Before reading an explanation, write your own answer and identify the evidence that supports it. Then change one detail in the scenario and explain whether your decision still fits. These are original learning exercises.
Keep a tracker with the topic, your explanation, practice activity, observed result and next review date. Mark a topic as understood when you can apply it to a different example. Reading a paragraph or recognising a familiar question is a starting point, but it does not establish that you can solve an unfamiliar problem.
For each mistake, record the initial assumption, the evidence that contradicted it and the corrected principle. Write a fresh scenario with different details and repeat the reasoning. This makes the lesson reusable and helps you select additional study material for a specific gap instead of collecting resources without a purpose.
Email freelearning@ciscoforall.com with your exam code and name, the product or framework version if known, and the topics you need. We will send an available older reference file free of charge. Availability varies; a free file may not be available for every target. The original learning notes and exercises here are free to read without requesting a file.
Older reference PDFs can explain foundations while using earlier terminology, objectives or product behaviour. Compare them with your current target and verify version-specific information. We share only resources we are permitted to distribute. If the target is unclear, include its exact name so the reference request can be understood.
Use this guide to organise foundations and identify weak topics, then choose a relevant ISC2 Premium PDF for additional review. Connect the resource with a defined task: explain a concept, compare alternatives or repeat a practical scenario. Continue checking your reasoning and the version that matches your target.
A structured preparation routine combines topic review, original exercises and an error log. Avoid selecting a resource only because its name looks similar to another credential. Your chosen exam, its current scope and the skills you need should determine which material is useful.
